Enterprise startup, Business, Enterpreneurship in Alberta

Given Today's economy and job lossess, One might have to think about a Enterprise/Business right after landing in Alberta.

Please share post your opinion, experiences..

1. Is there any example of sucessful Enterprise/Business establishment?

2. Any Tax issues while running a Business or any Tax rebates as a Minority owned, Immigrant owned Business?

3. Any license, certification or permission requirement before establishing a Professional Service Business?

4. What norms are imposed by federal and provincial government to start and run an enterprise especially in service & manufacturing Industry?

5. Any experience about Financial Arrangements, Bank Finance, Credit Union promotional initiatives, Debt-equity ratio for getting a loan?

6. Core Industries of Alberta includes, Agriculture, Oil and Gas, Transportation and construction. Is there any sucessful example of immigrant who purchased a Business or started in these industries?

My 2 cents to the below questions!!!

1. Is there any example of sucessful Enterprise/Business establishment? There are many available. Search on Wikipedia.

2. Any Tax issues while running a Business or any Tax rebates as a Minority owned, Immigrant owned Business? No. But remember that tax is high in canada as compared to USA. Also remember that canada has a policy of catch up taxation. Meaning.. If you are working in canada and paying taxes and then in between say you come to USA to work and if you file taxes in USA, you will have to pay catch up taxes in canada as well. Example, if your tax in canada is 35% and tax in US is 30%, then you will have to pay 30 % tax in US and additional 2% tax in Canada. .... I know this as this happened to my friend. Please do your own research to validate this. I may be wrong. This may bring up many other questions as well, which i also have and i keep searching for answers on google.

3. Any license, certification or permission requirement before establishing a Professional Service Business? It depends on the type of business you want to start. If its an insurance agency that you want to start, then you need to get licensed.

4. What norms are imposed by federal and provincial government to start and run an enterprise especially in service & manufacturing Industry? This is unique for each and every service.

5. Any experience about Financial Arrangements, Bank Finance, Credit Union promotional initiatives, Debt-equity ratio for getting a loan? Its difficult to get a loan if you do not have any history. But again this depends upon the service or enterprise that you want to start. A friend of mine wanted to setup a 10 people development center in edmonton, but he could not even get a loan of $15,000. Ultimately he found an angel investor.

6. Core Industries of Alberta includes, Agriculture, Oil and Gas, Transportation and construction. Is there any sucessful example of immigrant who purchased a Business or started in these industries. I would also like to learn about this.
