Hello everyone,
While abroad, the passport of my son has expired. The CAD passport renewal process where I am now is a big hassle. My question is that can my son enter Canada with the expired CAD passport? He has the CAD birth certificate and a valid foreign passport. He will be traveling with me and his mother and we both have a valid CAD passport. Thanks for your time.

1. If his foreign passport is visit visa exempt to Canada then sure get a flight back and CBSA will deal with the immigration side of things when you arrive. You may get extensive questioning and CBSA will want to make sure the child matches the bio data profile on the Canadian passport (too many people bringing in babies this way that are not the passport holder).

2. If his foreign passport is not visit visa exempt then no dice as no airline will baord him. Alternative is to get a facilitation visa but this is more hassle than the passport and being a 1 time use why sweat it this way?

Note even with 1 above airline can be a pain and insist on a round trip ticket. Who you flying with? Check their Id requirements.

Good question... The main problem I see is the airline not letting you son board the plane. If his Canadian passport is expired they will not let him use it. If his foreign passport is from a country that requires a visa to travel to Canada, and I assume he has no such visa in this passport, then the airliner will also not let him board.

If I were in your situation I would call the airline and confirm what you need to do. You may need to get some kind of urgent travel document from the Canadian consulate for you son.

Good luck

You will have to renew the Child's passport or appl for an emergency travel document (this can be used to return to Canada)...
The airline will not let the Child board the flight.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Actually his foreign passport requires a visa to enter Canada and having that said, I will take your advise go the minimum hassle pathway which is renewing his passport. They are making it difficult abroad where both parents should appear in person and this means 6 hours trip to the embassy with my whole family. Thanks again everyone.
