I just graduated from canadian university and I received a job offer in Canada. I start my job this month. I flew to united states for vacation for a month and I was planning to enter Canada via road on my passport and my expired PR card. I have lost my CoPR. I plan on entering Canada this weekend and then going back to USA and then going back to Canada for good to start my job 2 weeks later.

I have applied for Canadian citizenship in March and so far I received an email acknowledging the receiving of the application.

I have applied for PR card in February, I called and they have not started processing my application, I can not see my application online and the only proof I have that I applied for a new PR card is a receipt saying i paid 50$ but it does not say what was the 50$ for.

I also applied for verification of status to get a copy of the CoPR but I also cant check the application status online, all I have is a receipt showing I paid 30$ but again it does not say what the 30$is for.

Can anyone share their experience entering Canada via road without CoPR, with expired PR card? Any tips for me?

You will be fine. Carry proof of the renewal app and your citizenship app. You may also want to carry proof that you currently live in Canada.

I only report what I see on the CIC website... based on what the OP said.
There is nothing on IRCC or CBSA websites that say a COPR is required.

As long as CBSA can confirm one is a PR, they will have no problem entering Canada.

Thank you everyone who answered the post. Update time:

To prove I'm a resident I printed out
  • 2015 and 2016 notices of assessment (CRA website would not let me go back further, 2017 wasn't available yet)
  • Confirmations of enrollment from my university for the time I was a student
  • Receipts from applying for VOR, pr card and citizenship
  • Acknowledgement of receipt of my citizenship application
  • Job offer letter in Canada
The documents were my back up plan for when the officer is like wait a minute your pr card is expired, did you meet your residency requirement ? Here is how it went at the border:

Me: hello (while passing the officer passport and expired pr card)
Officer: hello, how long have you been out of Canada?
M: x time
O: are you bringing anything back with you?
M: no
O: have you applied for a new PR card?
M: yes
O: (gives back the documents) have a nice day

30 seconds of interaction. Never needed the printed documents.

I'll come back to update how I did when I'm going to be crossing into Canada later this month with my expired pr and no copr

So I reentered canada twice with my expired pr card. Both times I was asked to show my receipt showing that I applied for a new pr card. One time I forgot to bring a physical copy of it and I showed it on my phone. The agent told me that I am supposed to have physical copy of it but nonetheless took my phone and looked at it.

Anyway even though it says decision made on my pr card I doubt I will see it for a long time so I will have to stick to traveling to Canada via land...

I hope my expirience will help someone in my situation. I will probably come back one more time to update you on how i deal without pr card until one is issued to me.

My wife also crossed the land border twice with expired PR card but no physical receipt was required by the CBSA officer. A few verbal questions and let us go.

That’s really strange. Which border crossing was that? I have traveled several times with my expired PR card and never asked for any documents. Mostly it was for shopping purposes only some questions, except for one time when I traveled to my home country. Even that time no documents were asked , sent to secondary questioning inside where they asked where I was working etc took my passport and after 10-15 minutes gave back and I came back into Canada. Even that I guess was because it was not the regular border crossing I take, but the Aldergrove/Lynden border crossing which I did to avoid wait time.

It was in Detroit, bridge crossing into windsor Ontario. I am pretty sure it's possible to cross without the receipt but since I had it I just gave it to them. They barely looked at it anyway. One officer asked for it, I was passing it and they just said, it's ok, go on, have a good day. I could have said no, I don't have it but I did not want to deal with the officers asking more questions or sending me to secondary.

Hello! I'm not sure if you'll still reply on this thread. But I would just ask what Documents or IDs should i bring with me if I have an expired PR card with me when entering canada via car. Thank you!

Your passport and any documents you need if you are trying to ask for H&C consideration. You also need proof of your quarantine plans. If you’re entering during the pandemic you may be asked for proof of the 14 days you spent in the US.
