Enter Canada one day by using work permit, any problem?

Hi everyone,

My situation is : I got work permit outside Canada in May, and my PNP application is still in processing. This September I will flight to Toronto for transfer to another country. During the transfer, I need to wait for 20 hours for another flight. My relatives in Toronto invite me to stay one night in their home, and then they will drive me to catch the transfer flight.

My question is: Is it OK for me to enter Canada and only stay one day by using work permit? in my return flight in January next year, I will enter Canada again and start working for my employer in Saskatchewan.

Do you think it will have any problem in my case? I really want to make sure there is no risk/affect to enter Canada for one day, and then will enter again later. Otherwise, I rather stay in Toronto airport 20 hours, to wait for the transfer flight.

Does anyone have the same situation? Please help me! Thank You!

Bro do you have temporary resident visa? if not then you cannot enter canada with work permit...you need to apply for TRV to enter into canada.........

Are you sure you don't need Canada Transit Visa to pass through a Canadian Airport? I will advise you to check well before you leap...

I don't have a temporary visiting visa, but my work permit is multiple entry. And I have no idea about transit visa.
Do I have to apply a transit visa in a Canada embassy? or somewhere else?

I bought the flight ticket already, if I can't transfer in Canada I have to cancel my flight and wast money.

Please help me out!

To clarify, a work permit does not say anything about "multiple entry". So perhaps, you need to confirm whether it is a work permit(paper form) you have or a work visa(counterfoil stamped in your passport)? It is the work visa that usually says whether you have 'single' or 'multiple' entry.

If you got a work permit outside Canada, I take it was a renewal? I ask because if it was an initial permit(first time), they would have issued just a temporary resident visa(TRV) and given you a LOI(letter of introduction) which you present at the port of entry and an officer issues your work permit.

If you have just a valid work permit, you need a TRV at minimum to enter Canada. What I suggest you do is check the requirements for citizens of your country to enter Canada to see if you need a transit visa. If you will be staying one night(i.e. leaving airport), you will definitely need a TRV or transit visa unless you come from a visa-exempt country(US, UK, etc).

You are absolutely correct. I have a multiple entry TRV and a LOI. I have mistaken it for a work permit. I have never entered Canada yet. Sorry for the confusion.

So, the question is now whether I can use this TRV (category W-1 worker) to enter Canada for the first time for only 20 hours to transfer to another flight.

Here are more background information. The job offer is from my employer in Saskatchewan. I need to take a flight transfer in the Toronto airport to visit my wife in another country. Would there be problems because the TRV is for a work permit but I am essentially using it as a a transit visa for now?

In that case, it is likely they will process your work permit at the first port of entry to Canada. I don't know if it will be a problem staying for just 20 hours though I don't see why it should be. I mean it doesn't make sense to me to apply for a transit visa when you have a TRV.

My advice if you decide to enter with the TRV and LOI will be to be truthful if the border officer asks questions and only answer what is asked. If you still plan to work in Canada but need to travel for now(transit) you can say this. But only if they ask.
