Hey,

Exactly the question from my topic I could get answered from the cic.gc.ca website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=941&top=25 but this answer is for an IEC visa (International Experience Canada).

However, my current situation is a little bit different, as it is based on an ICT and not IEC:
I've applied for an ICT and this got approved in February 19 (I'm a German citizen) and I have received the letter of invitation (not yet arrived in Canada).
Now I've applied for my spouse for an open work permit (and kids for a study permit) which is not yet decided from the IRCC, but we plan to travel to Canada already very soon (1-2 weeks from now from Germany).

My questions are now:
  • Can my spouse and kids already enter Canada with an eTA BEFORE we (hopefully) receive the approval for the open work permit and the approvals for the study permits of the kids?
  • I have a valid eTA already from my ICT application, but for my spouse and kids I would apply for one separately (also separate from the OWP/SP applications) - Will this separate eTA affect anything in regards to the OWP/SP?
I'm aware of that my spouse can't work until she receives the approval for the open work permit, but we'd be interested to travel to Canada as a visitor already before the decision on the OWP as well as Study Permits.

Any help or comments would be appreciated!

Thanks,
odnivass

They can get eTAs and enter as visitors. This will not affect the OWP/SP apps.

However, once the OWP/SP apps are approved, they will be required to leave Canada and re-enter in order to activate them. This is a big consideration if you aren't going to be anywhere near the Canada-US border to be able to flagpole.

Awesome, thanks for your quick reply!
That's good news, as we'll be around Toronto/Ottawa anyways. So this is rather easy for them to re-enter to Canada from a near by Canada-US border :)

Thanks @canuck_in_uk
I've actually another question now.
Since I've applied for the ICT and got approved based on my old passport, an eTA was also issued based on the old passport.
Now I've gotten a new passport and my questions are whether I should:
  • just apply for a new eTA and bring the old passport with me to the immigration when entering Canada as the ICT app is connected to the old passport?
  • should I write the IRCC before I come to Canada and update them with the new passport? Will they issue a new eTA for me like they did initially with the ICT?
  • doesn't matter, both above options will work?
I found again the answer already on the cic.gc.ca website, but it was again for an IEC app and not a general answer:

Thanks again for a quick answer!

Just apply for a new eTA. You don't need to update IRCC.
