Engineers who can't be called engineers...

Hi,
I work in the aerospace sector, as a design engineer, my specialism being the design and engineering of aircraft structures and interiors.
In the uk, my degree is recognised by the uk council for CEng and IEng, however APEG doesn't recognise it for engineering in BC.
I am an engineer, I produce engineering, and as such the jobs I apply for and the job title on my cv is Aerospace Design Engineer.
However as I cannot be an engineer by title in Canada, what am I?

Am I now a 'designer'?

Also are all job adverts in Canada which say 'engineer' are they all automatically assuming that you will be a P.Eng to apply?
In which case what job title should I be looking for?
I do engineering so I have no clue what else you would call it.

I applied and was successful in the FSWP under NOC code 2146, aerospace engineer.

Grateful for any clarification.

Hi

I take it you have a degree since your CEng? You can't be an engineer in bc without a degree

In Canada engineering is a regulated and protected profession to register as PEng in Canada you need you first need to enrol as an engineer in training, you need a certain amount of years as in training working in Canada in order to gain PEng

Each province is slightly different look at this link for bc https://www.apeg.bc.ca/Become-a-Member/Membership-Types/Members-in-Training/EIT-First-Time-Applying-in-Canada

Unless you can gain experience as an engineer IN Canada you will not be able to register as PEng - this is Canada's way of trying to protect the engineering profession

You should be able to find a job as a designer or even an engineering technician

Its quite a thing....

Any job title can't have the word ENGINEER unless the employee is a PEng. That said you are an Engineer, but not a Professional Engineer.... that is for all other aspects BUT working you are an engineer. uh? Yes.... for example if you need to be a Civil Engineer for getting a Masters of Engineering , you in fact qualify as an Engineer as in academy there is no distinction.

But job title and job posting is not the same. For example a company can post a job called "mechanical engineer". No PEng needed. You get hired and then when you get your payroll you are annotated as "mechanical consultant"... usually the head of the team is in fact a PEng which takes responsibility for the team and which will sign all documents as he is the "engineer" and you are not an "engineer" you are a "consultant".

Long story short, look for jobs as you will usually do, read the job description and if in doubt then ask.

BTW, I am an Engineer... I don't care what "college of engineers" says about it, I studied my 5 years, got my degree, then got my masters, I am recognized by 150 countries as one... so I am entitled to be called "Mr. Engineer" even though this "college"doesn't want to recognize me. ;)

A common mistake done by immigrants is to use the title "Engineer" when they do not hold an engineering license. It is against the "Professional Engineering Act" to use "Professional Engineer" or an abbreviation or variation such as "Engineer"! Please refer to:

http://www.peo.on.ca/index.php?ci_id=1824&la_id=1
http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/statutes/english/elaws_statutes_90p28_e.htm

Such act will have likes in the other jurisdictions across Canada.

And refer to 3(1) on the APEGA act:

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your responses.

May I just state that I clearly understand that I cannot call myself an engineer, hence the entire reason for asking on this forum what else I might be known by and so that I can avoid any wrong doing.

It is very hard to know what job titles your can look for or identify yourself with when you cannot call yourself what you are.
Imagine a chef being asked not to call his/herself a chef, they could be a food preparation specialist, engineer doesn't seem so straightforward. Especially when adverts for lower level engineering positions still appear titled as for engineers, which on the face of it appears to eliminate candidates such as myself who are not yet licensed.

So back to engineering job adverts,
as suggested on here, I can apply for jobs which are titled 'engineer' and then I can be in a role such as a 'technical design consultant' and work for a P.Eng?
So best advise is to query the job advert before applying?
To see if they will take on 'consultants' or whatever term is given to those working for a P.Eng as their supporting team.
So can I assume that unless the advert states P.Eng requirement I can apply as a designer?

It's all complicated to understand for those of us who did not grow up with the Canadian system.
It's just a matter of understanding what I can do now in terms of applying for a design job, working up the experience and then becoming an engineer in training, sitting exams and working up to P.Eng.

Apply for any engineering job you think you can do, without calling yourself an engineer. Needless to say that for jobs that require P.Eng. registration you will not be able to apply. Whe they hire you, they most likely will call you a designer.

I realized that writing 'design engineer" in a resume is something that is not well understood in Canada. Because engineer is engineer and designer is designer!!

As for licensing, I always tell any newcomer engineering graduate to apply for EIT.
