Hi,

My ex-company (Infosys Ltd) has refused to provide me a job reference letter explaining my (past) roles and responsibilities. I can however, get a reference letter from one of my managers. The questions I have are:

1) I have had a decent progression (from systems engineer to a consultant). Should I mentioned every single role (and designation)? There might be few overlapping NOCs.
2) The HR team will not provide the company letterhead to my manager. Is it fine to do on an A4 sheet? I hope so.
3) I had worked under that manager only for few (and the initial) years. Should I seek an additional reference with/under whom I had worked recently?

Thank you for your responses.

P.S : Due to the volume of posts in this forum, it was difficult to dig through past answers. Kindly excuse me if I am yet another person asking similar questions.

Focus on those job titles where your NOC changed as well. Job title changes (especially in the distant past and without corresponding change in NOC) add zero value to your application.

2) The HR team will not provide the company letterhead to my manager. Is it fine to do on an A4 sheet? I hope so.

It is a prerequisite that such letters be NOT on the letterhead. Anything on the letterhead indicates tacit approval from the organization which is precisely what you don't have here. Do it on plain paper, get them to sign the document, ensure it is written 'from' your ex manager 'to whoever it may concern (definitely NOT a self declaration by you) and get that document notarized.

3) I had worked under that manager only for few (and the initial) years. Should I seek an additional reference with/under whom I had worked recently?

You don't have to showcase all your experience. CRS maxes out at 3 years of experience. FSW eligibility maxes out at 6 years of experience under the same NOC. Relevant experience for both these categories involves NOC 0/A/B jobs within the last 10 years counting back from the date you will submit your post ITA application. Think about all your experience and get a reference letter from the manager who fulfill these 3 criteria in your specific case. Having said that, no harm providing proof for all your experience if you can manage to swing that - it won't add any extra points but it might save your neck if one of those reference letters is rejected for some reason or the other - the other superfluous reference letters just might save the day for you.

Thank you for your responses.

Some more patience in searching would lead you to hundreds of threads on this (and other) critical topics. All the best!

Systems Engineer and Consultant are very generic job titles and are suitable with tonnes of engineering jobs; choose the NOC that highly coincides with your functional role [Computer/Electrical/Mechanical/IT/Telecom/Civil/Architecture etc. ? ]

No matter how many references you take from your current/previous managers; they won't work without a letter head [mentioning complete address and contact details of your employer] and signed/stamped [stamp is optional] by the authorized person [ authorized person may be your HR or your manager, if he has been given authority to issue letters]
