Hey all,
We received our Permanant Residence card for my wife in March. PTL!!!
I am employed full time, and so was she since receiving her SIN number. Our place of employment sometimes lays people off from December to January. I will will be working full time (I am a Canadian Citizen) but my wife might be laid off. Would she be able to apply to employment insurance? I wasn't sure if she could as she is being sponsored by me.

being sponsored has nothing to do with whether she can apply for unemployment, so a person can be a sponsored PR and still qualify for EI. The sponsor is not responsible for paying this back since it is technically money the employee has already paid into the system.

to qualify, a person has to have paid into the EI account and be unemployed. if she's paid into EI, then she may be eligible. I would recommend reading the information on the service canada website:
