Edmonton' VS Calgary ?

Dear All , kindly share your experiences here for new immigrants regarding job hunting , housing, daily living expense and drawbacks of both cities ? also which city is better and why ?

I would prefer EDMONTON.

Both are good. Calgary rental is costlier than Edmonton. Calgary got more direct air connections from Europe cities.

With the recession hitting the Oil/Gas sector very hard, you would need to be very realistic about the time it would take to find a job in your industry. There have been numerous layoffs affecting many firms, so there is a glut of locally experienced talent, making it harder for newcomers to land jobs in their industry. Calgary is mostly corporate offices etc, so many jobs in the head-office locations have been affected. Edmonton, Fort Mc etc typically have operating companies which have taken a hit as well, but again, there are at present limited jobs with multiple applicants.

Having said that, if one is willing to work on survival jobs, then either city can work for you. I live in Edmonton but frequently visit Calgary, so can only comment that living expenses appear reasonably close, but Edmonton "appears" to be cheaper.

My frank advice to many recent immigrants has been to be complete the landing process for Canada with an extended vacation and then to return to their current jobs until the market stabilizes/recovers. Take the opportunity to shore up on savings and initiate P.Eng process with relevant instituation (APEGA, PEO etc).

Survival jobs may be easy to get but the job in your own profession may not be easy to get, especially in this recession time.
