You are only allowed to work on campus the first six months. Then you can apply for an off campus work permit and work part time off campus. Working illegally is a huge risk and reports on this forum is that students are being deported for working illegally.

itstime is correct. Do not under any circumstances work off-campus before six months is over. If you are caught, it is bye-bye canada forever. However, you can find loads of jobs on-campus. You are allowed 20 hours a week.

Thank you! Work permit after 6 months of studies with good grades is possible.

Not only is it bye-bye for the person working illegally but for every international student doing that, getting caught and getting deported - the more hoops all of us, who genuinely want to study in Canada, have to jump through.

However, I have a feeling that on campus you are allowed to work full time. It's only off campus you're not. Correct me please, if I'm wrong.

Even on-campus you can work only 20 hours a week. During the holidays you can work full-time. And everybody gets off-campus work permit after six months, if your University or college comes under the Participating institutes. You do not need good grades for that.

And yes these type of kids, doing work illegaly, they spoil our image.

To work off campus, you must apply for a work permit. Do not begin to work off campus until you have received your work permit. The work permit authorizes you to work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions, and full time during scheduled breaks (for example, winter and summer holidays, and spring break).

A work permit does not guarantee that you will find a job. It is your responsibility to look for work. Even if you work off campus, your studies must be the main reason you are in Canada.

If you are no longer a full-time student or do not maintain satisfactory academic results, you must return your work permit to a local Citizenship and Immigration Canada office.

"Satisfactory academic results" = good grades.

You do not understand what this means. It means that once you get off-campus work permit and if you concentrate on your jobs more and neglect your studies, then your off-campus work permit will be taken away from you. This is what it means. To initially apply for it, you do not need good grades. Read the sentence again dear :D

You are absolutely correct. However, I was told (or read on an official page somewhere) that you have to send in your grades from the first semester when applying for OCWP to show that you already have good academic standings. Can you verify that?

Hmm sure that could be true but I am not sure whether all unis or colleges require that. Are you already in Canada? Maybe someone there can help you.

London handles my country. I'm also TRV exempt so no need for that. Been waiting three weeks.

BTW - it's not the colleges/unis who demands good academic standings for an OCWP. It's CIC.

Hang on, now the research junkie in me has to check this.

Found it!

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-offcampus-who.asp

To be eligible for an Off-Campus Work Permit, you must:

have a valid study permit
study at a participating institution (for a list of participating institutions in the Off-Campus Work Permit Program, see the Related Links section at the bottom of this page)
have been a full-time student for at least six of the 12 months preceding the date of your work permit application
be in satisfactory academic standing (find out more about satisfactory academic standing in the Related Links section at the bottom of this page) and
sign a form authorizing the institution, the province, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to share your personal information (to confirm that you are continuing to study full time and that you are in satisfactory academic standing).

And in the related links:

1.8 Satisfactory academic standing

Each participating institution will define satisfactory academic standing for its institution. Satisfactory academic standing means achieving a satisfactory mark or grade point average for a particular program of study, or the completion of certain program requirements as specified by the program of study.
