Good evening,

I'm thinking in going to live and work in Vancouver, but then someone told me that is a zone of Earthquakes.

I'm afraid because of that.

When was the last time a person died due to an Earthquake in Vancouver?

Or this is not a reason to be afraid of?

Thanks

Two people died on Vancouver Island in 1946. I couldn't find any record of any fatalities in Vancouver itself or the lower mainland area in recorded history.

So far in 2012, Vancouver has experienced 12 traffic fatalities (and that rate is considered to be low) so it suggests to me you are far more likely to be killed in a car accident of some sort than you are to be killed by an earthquake.

In the four years I've been here, I haven't felt anything (and I have been in earthquakes before, both in California and Japan).

Vancouver and Victoria Island are on Seattle fault.

When Seattle city was growing, US govt doesn't know about that fault or they didn't took it seriously .

It is sure that in next 100 year (may be tomorrow or may be next year or may be after 99 year, if you do deep research then you will find various hypothesis claiming big earthquake inbetween 2020-2040 ) there is a big probability that Seattle (one of biggest city in western America ) will get destroyed by that earthquake , that earthquake will definitely bring lot of damage to Vancouver and Victoria island .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Fault

But this thing is similar to Dooms day where we all know that one day whole world will get destroyed (may be tomorrow or may be after 1000 years ).

I personally won't choose to live in similar area , if I got choice .
But all thease are just prediction based on some calculation, only Allah knows what's in future .
And he is only protector .

I don't see how one could read the cited Wikipedia article as supportive of almost any of these claims: it doesn't indicate any time line, just noting that the last known event along that specific fault line were approximately 1100 years ago. With respect to damage, the article really only discusses the damage to bridges and the problems associated with their collapse in a major earthquake event.

The cited fault line is an east/west fault line. Vancouver is 225km northwest of Seattle. There are no known fault lines in Vancouver itself.

According to NRC, the only thread of a major (9.0 richter scale event) earthquake arises along the Cascadia subduction zone. This is far enough away from Vancouver that the building code doesn't require any additional seismic planning beyond what is required in other areas known to get earthquakes in Canada (e.g., Toronto and Montreal).

Vancouver doesn't typically get ice storms, massive snow falls, tornadoes, or hurricanes (or "sub tropical depressions with hurricane force winds"). Earthquakes are something for which we can properly build structures and handle. In the end, this is about your own perception of risk, which likely has nothing to do with the actual level of risk involved. I suspect you are more likely to die in a car accident than an earthquake, yet I suspect few people avoid cars as a result.

Dont go for that wiki article .
U Just spend 4-5 hours researching and googeling, definately you will find out truth.
I didnt have much time that i can quote correct referances that time , will updates referances whenever i get time.
That wiki article i quoted just so that you get some line to do your own research.

Whatever I have written on my original post is what I know due to subjective study (master degree) quite few year ago.

I just did some quick googling.. and in the order of seismic risk Vancouver is highest, followed by Montreal, Ottawa and others. In general, the Vancouver island has the highest risk, followed by the Atlantic island provinces.

No, impaired drivers on the roads are more dangerous than bears.

Had a good 4.3 downtown this week in Vancouver.
I felt it in New Westminster. It was my first earthquake and it wasn't a nice experience. I'm really scared when I hear about the risk of a bigger one.
