Does anyone know where i can read about the duration of a visitor's visa or what different types of visitor's visas are available to be granted by a CBSA agent when a visitor arrives in Canada?

The reason I ask is, I am married to a South Korean woman. We have been living in South Korea since we got married 8 years ago. We have visited Canada together several times already and on those occasions she was granted a 6 month visitor's visa under the visa waiver arrangements between Canada and South Korea,

We are planning to move back to Canada permanently in a few weeks. We have applied for PR for her and my sponsorship application has been approved. Her file is currently in Manila where we will probably be waiting another 8-9 months for approval. A six month visitor's visa will probably expire before her PR approval comes through. Now, I have read elsewhere that people doing the same thing, advised the CBSA agent that they were coming to visit Canada to wait out the PR process with their spouse and that the CBSA agent granted them a 1 year visitor's visa so that they wouldn't have to apply for an online extension. Does anyone know if that type of visa has a special name? Maybe it's just a regular visitor's visa with a longer duration. I don't know but I would like to know before we arrive.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I might read up on that. I can't find anything helpful on CIC or CBSA's website. Thanks for any help.

Entering Canada using her visa exempted passport and then extending is actually not bad. With the extension, one can get a visitor record - one of the primary id to get the Canadian driver licence:
