Don't expect to get anything back. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. If you have a very precious letter or original picture, it's better to make a copy of it and send that.

For pictures you can just print them out anyways, so shouldn't be an issue if they keep or not.

My husband received EVERYTHING back from the visa office, and I mean everything, minus the actual actual application papers, police certificate, and medical paper. Everything else was returned, even the additional papers we wrote for the application.

We photocopied everything and printed pictures from the computer, just in case.
