Hello everyone. Me and my husband are Permanent Resident and we are planning to go back to the Philippines for good. If we apply for the Citizenship and became dual citizen (Filipino and Canadian), my questions are:
1. Can we go back to Canada if we stay 10years or more in the Philippines?
2. Are we gonna file the tax for the year of our absence?
3. Is there an effect to our Canadian Citizenship if we stay long outside Canada?(for example 10 years)

I saw in the google, a canadian citizen can stay outside Canada for maximum of 182 days or 6months during a 12month period. Is that true? If I am a dual citizen, (Filipino Canadian) if I stay in the Philippines for 10years, can I still go back?

Being a dual citizen would not give you a timeline of how long you have to stay in coutnry or not . Per tax rules if you are not a resident of canada therefore no property or investments. for a set amount of time you will not have to file taxes in Canada. "If you are planning to be outside Canada for an extended period of time, you must inform the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) before you leave to determine your residency status. "

"
You are a non-resident of Canada for income tax purposes if you:

  • normally or routinely live in another country and are not considered a resident of Canada
  • do not have significant residential tiesto Canada, and
    • live outside Canada throughout the tax year, or
    • stay in Canada for less than 183 days in the tax year

Non-residents of Canada are required to pay taxes only on certain income from Canadian sources."

That relates to your residency status for tax purposes. Once you are a citizen you remain a citizen for life unless you renounce it or it is revoked for fraud, treason, terrorism, etc. The whole point of citizenship vs. PR is that you can leave Canada for 10 years and still come back whenever you want.

You'll need to return to Canada to take the citizenship test and to do your citizenship oath.
