So I was born in Australia however my dad was born in Canada and has a Canadian passport (expired though) and a Canadian birth certificate which I assume means I'm eligible for Canadian citizenship as well. I was going through the paperwork that you have to fill out to get a citizenship and it asked for my parents Canadian certificate number. My dad doesn't have a Canadian citizenship certificate will this be a problem for me to obtain a Canadian citizenship? Or is the certificate number something that's on the birth certificate?

Also my dad only spent about 6 months in Canada as a baby then (as far as I'm aware I'm not sure, I'd have to ask) never went back. Would this be a problem?

You are a Canadian citizen, because your father was born in Canada. It doesn't matter how much time he spent in Canada.

The application form asks for your father's certificate number, and I'm sure this means the number of his Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, which document he (being born in Canada) would not have. However, others have reported that they entered the birth certificate number in this spot and had no problem. Example of a certificate with number: http://www.citynews.ca/wp-content/blogs.dir/sites/10/2014/04/birth-certificate.jpg

Be aware that any certificates you send with the application won't be returned, so it's best to have certified copies made by the Canadian High Commission in Australia.

Also, do not leave any area of the application blank. If something doesn't apply, write in N/A or explain how it doesn't apply (e,g. "mother not a Canadian citizen").

Those born in Canada generally don't ever have a Certificate of Citizenship because their Canadian birth certificate is proof of citizenship. Write N/A.

It doesn't matter how long your father was or was not in Canada.
