Hi there, I need help figuring this out. My son was born just a few weeks ago here in Canada. I've already reported his birth to census Canada and have the birth certificate. My question is, we want him to have dual citizenship. What do we have to do and what are we required to do to have him attain it? Do we have to report his birth at US census too, if so, is there a decay period? Is it too late to do it now since he was born end of January this year? Also, if I applied for spousal sponsorship for his dad prior to his birth does that mean he cannot get dual citizenship since his dad is under implied status here in Canada? My apologies fir bring ignorant, I have been trying to figure out how to go abouts on doing this and making sure we did not screw up his future.

You have until he turns 18. My husband is actually American/Canadian, just never got his US citizenship. I looked into it when we met because that would've been easier than me trying to immigrate to Canada..... ;)

Just keep in mind, he will be required to register for the draft at 18 even though he lives in Canada. He can be called for the draft too. He'll also be required to file taxes in the US. There's a lot of great benefits too - like the ability to study or work in both countries.

Personally, if I have kids, I'll wait until they're about 14-15 and let them decide. Just my two cents :) Good luck!
