Hello,

I wanted some insight on this. I hold an American and Canadian passport. I am taking a trip to Tokyo with a layover in the US. I was wondering how this works. I plan on flying with my Canadian passport but I’m assuming I must enter the US with my American passport. My question is when I return from Tokyo, my stamps will be on my Canadian passport; Is that an issue when I’m showing my American passport during my return layover in the US? I don’t want to have to sit and explain my dual citizenship. What’s the best way to travel; which passport should I use? Thanks for your input!

It doesn't matter. I believe both countries are visa exempt to Japan.

Carry both passports and show the immigration officers the one you want to show when you arrive. It doesn't matter what you use partway through the trip as long as you use the correct one where it matters.
