Dual citizen entering US on US Global entry and Canada on Canadian NEXUS

My child is a dual US-Canada citizen with two passports. When we applied for the NEXUS card, we showed both passports and birth certificate (born in Canada). However, when we received the NEXUS card, the primary nationality is Canadian and NEXUS only allows for one citizenship to be associated with the card.

My understanding is that if you are US citizen, then the nationality must show US to satisfy U.S. Code Title 8, Chapter 12, Subchapter II, Part II, § 1185 paragraph b. We got hasselled about this at the border once because the officer asked if our child was a green card holder and what visa the child would enter on. Fortunately, we always travel with the child’s passports, so we were able to show the US passport.

I guess this will be an ongoing issue. The US NEXUS officers have told us that we need to apply for a new card, which is just ridiculous because it was their mistake. Can I just continue to use the current card and carry the US passport? Am I breaking a law or any NEXUS rules by doing this?

Obviously Canadian and American border agents failed to brief this issue. So I consider applying my child to get a US global entry so that we hope that this would solve the case My question is if this is okay to carry NEXUS (Canadian issued) and Global entry ( US issued)?

If you are enrolled in NEXUS, then you are automatically also enrolled in Global Entry. I normally fly for my trips to the US. I use the Global Entry kiosk for US immigration and NEXUS for Canadian immigration. But you don't get a Global Entry card in addition to your NEXUS card.

You are correct that CBP officers may hassle you at the border if your NEXUS card states the citizenship as Canadian if you have a US citizenship. I assume this is at a land crossing. I don't think you are breaking any laws if you don't update the card. But you may continue to get hassled because of it. Since your child is enrolled in Global Entry already, you can try asking for a Global Entry card also. But not sure if they will provide one if they know you already have a NEXUS card.
