Dual Canadian citizen entering US by air and exiting US by land

Hi, I am a dual Canadian citizen living abroad. I will be visiting USA using my foreign passport with a US visa. I am also planning to cross into Canada by land to visit my family using my expired Canadian passport and once in Canada, I’ll renew it.

My question is if I enter US by air with my foreign passport and then enter Canada by land with my Canadian passport, how will US immigration authorities know that I’ve exited USA? The I-94 for foreign visitors to US is linked to their passport. If I use a different passport to enter Canada, I am concerned that my departure will not be properly recorded, and might look as if I’ve overstayed my US visa.

Is there any sort of immigration control for foreign nationals leaving US by land? What can I do to make sure that CBSA will notify US authorities that I’ve departed USA on my foreign passport. Would appreciate any advice, thanks.

The United States does not carry out exit checks.

Your best option is to visit the US CBP checkpoint before exiting to report your departure. Previously with the paper I-94 you could turn it into CBSA who would forward it to CBP but now with the new electronic system CBP does not fully explain the procedures to follow, so going to the US checkpoint before departure will be you're best bet.

Once in Canada also request an entry stamp in your passport so you have solid proof that you have entered Canada.
