Hello all,
I am currently a year 1 PHD student. Realized that I am not really interested in research and instead would like to focus on medical fields with direct hands on, which also happens to be my previous background. Anyway, I am planning to drop from my PHD program ASAP and have few questions:
1. Is it possible for my dependent wife to change her status to student permit? If yes, can I change my status to her dependent once she starts her school? Also, can I get an OWP from my wife and start working?
2. My wife's English is really bad (I would say IELTS band 4 on each modules at max). If she is to join English language program, am I still eligible to change my status to her dependent?
TIA for your help. I am newbie to immigration stuff so please be kind if my questions are basic.

1. Yes she can apply for a study permit, but with little English ability she will find it difficult to get into any post secondary courses.
2. If she is accepted and once she starts her course, then you can apply for a spouse open work permit.
3. If she takes and ESL course, you are not eligible for an SOWP.

Thanks. My 1st priority is being her dependent and I can live without SOWP for few years.
3(i)- Can I be her dependent while she is enrolled in ESL program?
3(ii) Can I take few (3 classes at max depending upon degree program I choose- 2 Human Anatomy and Physiology, 1 Nutrition, 1 Kinesology, 1 Biochemistry, 1 calculus II) post secondary classes myself while she is enrolled in ESL program?
3(ii) Also, can I later change from her dependent to study permit again given I get admission to program of my interest? I am really looking into Master of Physical Therapy, Grad diploma in Cardiovascular perfusion, Master in Nursing etc. I will need to take few prerequisite classes before I can apply to these programs and will also need to do some clinical unpaid volunteer work for admission process. So, all I need as 1 year period as my wife's dependent so that I can fulfill all prerequisites and get admitted to school myself.
Thank you very much for all your help.

You can see if you can get a TRV but it is unlikely and you won't qualify for an OWP.

You would need a student visa to take classes.

You would again need to apply for a student visa and she would need to apply for an OWP at the same time. You may also have difficulty doing unpaid clinical work because that would be considered working and you wouldn't have a work permit.

Are you sure I would need a TRV given I am already in Canada.
