Driving through Canada from US - non resident

Hello,

I am a J1 status in the USA (non-resident, citizen of Poland). I plan to drive from Buffalo, NY to Detroit, MI this summer. From the map I see it would be much easier and quicker to drive through Canada, than around the lake.
What do I need to "drive-thru" Canada? Do I need a regular visa (TRV), or is there a special kind of temporary visa, just for short travel?

A non-resident visa for the U.S. won't allow you entry to Canada. You'll need the TRV.

... forgot to say .. yes, you can apply for a transit visa. You'll have to qualify the same as for a TRV, but the application doesn't cost anything.
Transit visas are for airports only see: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/5256E.PDF page 4

You will need a TRV (visitor.s visa) NOT the Transit Visa to enter Canada for a short visit. Single entry is good for six months - allows multiple entries between USA & Canada.
Good luck:
