Hello everyone,

I had some general doubts. Found this forum very great and active so thought of asking.

1) I am 17 year old and I have applied for humber college fall 17. Now,I had heard that adults below 17 Can't stay at hostel and have to live with a family. Is this true? I don't remember the source so confirming.

2) From when can we start working after entering in Canada? Do we have to wait 6 months for getting our first job? Also,do our age affects the kind of job we will get?

3) What is the job availability of part time jobs and how well can students manage studies and jobs? Someone's saying that jobs are hard to find due to recession while others say that they are available in plenty. And how hard it is for a Undergraduate student to manage job and study?

The challenge that you have is that at 17 you would still be considered a child in Ontario until 18 and in some other provinces 19 is the age of majority.

Hostels and even more so hotels have a minimum age for checkin for this reason. When do you reach 18 given until then if not accompanied by parents generally there is an expectation of some sort of custodianship/guardian arrangement

As for study permit did you read this http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/students/minor.asp specifically the section on discretionary custodianship

Others can comment but dont think there are any specific restrictions at 17 on work that might apply to a college student. You dont have to wait 6 months to get a job but of course you cannot start any work until your course starts and then only 20 hours a week maximum.

Many people do study and work as a means of supplementing any funds they started out with, some manage both study and work some do not so the advice generally is to not rely on part time work as the main means of support, certainly wont cover fees and living expense.

Ok! I understand. I'll need some sort of custodian/guardian and have to live with a Canadian family maybe.

P.s : I certainly do not want part time to cover my tuition fees. That I can pay. But what about part time jobs for living expenses? Can't we work on sat/sun and earn some bucks for our living expenses? I don't want to depend upon my parents for living expenses.
