Does training with an eTA count towards Canada work experience?

  • My current company that I work for in Canada has also an office in my country where I came from.
  • In 2019 I was brought by that company to Canada for training purposes under an eTA - electronic Travel Authorization
  • It was only an eTA, no work visa since Canada did not require it for training purposes
  • I trained for 6 months (continuous)
  • Company invited me to work for them in Canada
  • I have been working in Canada for about 9 months now with a work permit under the IEC - International Experience Canada
  • Once I have a minimum of 1 year of work experience in Canada I will be able to apply for my PR through CEC - Canadian Experience Class
  • Requirement is at least 1 year of work experience in Canada in the last 3 years prior to the PR application

As I was checking the other requirements I could not find anywhere if those 6 months of training in Canada I did in 2019 count towards the 1 year of work experience.

Would anyone here know if this is possible or not? I expect it does not count especially because I was not with a work visa.

No - this will not count as Canadian work experience. You weren't holding a valid work permit.

You need to wait until you have one year of work experience under the IEC before you can claim a year of work experience in Canada and qualify for CEC.
