Does the PNP fall under Express Entry? Or are they separate categories?

I'm studying here as an International Student and I want to stay in Canada after that. Express Entry seems very competitive but there could be chances for me under der Provincial Nominee Program.

Do I have to apply for Express Entry, if I apply for the Provincial Nominee Program? Or are both separate categories?
