Does the CIC do phone interviews?

Hi guys,

Some questions:

1. You know for the sponsorship process, how sometimes the foreign spouse gets interviewed by the CIC? Is this done over the phone, or would they ask us to travel to the city where the interview takes place?
For example: once I marry my girlfriend (she's Brazilian) and then start the sponsorship process (we will do it outland), if she were required to do an interview, probably it's the São Paulo visa office that will interview her.
But she lives in a city about 3 hour flight from São Paulo, so most likely would they just interview her over the phone or ask her to come to São Paulo no matter what?

2. Under what circumstances would the CIC request for an interview? Is it when they have doubt about the relationship? Or do they just do it randomly?
What are the typical questions during the interview?

Thanks!!

they do interview if they doubt the relationship, have any concerns or need u to clarify anything.

the interview is sometimes done over the fone, i know 2 person who had a phone interview, but usually in the vast majority of cases, it shud be done live in an embassy, and yes ur wife has to travel to sao paulo to attend the interview.

I think the whole dynamic of an interview would change if done over the phone. I would think it's easier to hide a reaction to a question without having the person there in front of you.

I would think your girlfriend would have to travel to Sao Paolo for her interview - unfortunately a distance of 3 hours would not deter them from having a live in-person interview.

The phone interview is usually done with the sponsor who is residing in Canada, the in-person interview is with the applicant, unless both are in the country. Then the both the sponsor and applicant are interviewed in person.

I'm wondering if anyone in this forum came across having an interview with both (sponsor & applicant) for outland application.

Search : http://www.canlii.org/en/ca/irb/index.html under spouse sponsorship you will find a no. of appeals to the IAB where the CIC did have telephone and in some cases video conferences with the sponsor in Canada.
