Does one year study gap matter for undergraduate students?

Hi everyone,
One of my friend completed his A levels on june 2010,but he didnt apply for any university then.Now he wants to apply for a university in canada.Will the study gap matter at all?Does he have to explain anything to the university?He wants to do bachelor of science and want to apply for this fall semester.Please reply if anyone knows the answer.

no it wont..only if it is like 1 year or more that it needs to be justified
