Does my spouse need to have a return ticket when coming to Canada?

Hi,

I'm a Canadian and my spouse is Korean.
We will marry in next April in S.Korea.

and right after, coming to Canada and apply the spousal sponsorship, and open work permit.
Of course, my spouse is coming to Canada with visitor visa.
but, I heard that a person visiting Canada with visitor visa has to have a return ticket, otherwise, refused to enter.

So in our case,
My spouse doesn't have to, or has to have a return ticket?
Or, Is there any documents that we have to prepare before entering Canada?

It depends.

My husband has flown to Canada before with his visitor visa with a one way ticket and it was fine.

This last time, the check in agent would not let him in without a return ticket, so we bought one right then and there and cancelled it when we landed in Canada.

So I think it depends on the airline. Some will require a return ticket. The CBSA agent in Canada night also ask about a return ticket, sometimes they don’t.

I came to Canada on July this year while applying for PR (outland process).
I have a visitor visa and bought one way ticket. It was fine for me to get in.
I was already married and the agent asked me what l was doing there and l said "visiting my husband" he asked if l was aware of the sponsorship process so l could live with him l said " Yes, we are in the process of doing it" and he asked if l was at the final stages and l said " Yes" since my background check had just started at the time.

That was your experience - but this isn't a consistent experience. We've seen a number of cases on this forum where people have been refused boarding by their airline without a return ticket.
