They verify everything, all your employments from top to bottom, and all the qualifications 10th onwards.

I cannot understand if your visas has been issued then there will be no verification after visa issue your file is closed for any further action ........now you are in safe zone and at any time you can land .....

Normally 5 references are required, phone calls are made to last supervisor and payroll department. Other references like co employees, clients , former managers etc get emails.

This is not always the case. It will really depend what jobs you apply for. If you are applying at a gas station or a store, I am sure nobody cares about checking references. I am working a very big company. I never gave any references and no one asked for one. I never showed my school or college degree and no past work experience certificates and they did not bother to ask for one.

If luckily you get job in your respective field, give reference of a friend or college who worked with you and that should be fine. If you have good relation with any other supervisor or manager, give their details and inform the person that he might get a call from a prospective employer.
