Do permanent residents require a valid passport?

So I have about a year until my passport will expire. I am in Canada now with a open work permit.

I am quite positive that I should be able to get a PR within the year, however, it will be very tough for me to extend my passport from my home country.

In that case, if my passport were to expire AFTER I became a Canadian PR, does that matter? provided that I do not leave Canada

PRs in Canada are not required to hold a valid passport. However, if your passport is close to expiring when your app is almost done, IRCC may require you to obtain a new one before finalizing the app.

You can't apply for PR without a valid passport. It's a required document to finalize your application.
