Under current rules ¨to be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) out of the four years (1,460 days) preceding your application. Please note that you cannot meet the residence requirements for citizenship without a minimum of two (2) years as a permanent resident.

When calculating your time in Canada:
•only the four (4) years preceding the date of your application are taken into account;
•each day you lived in Canada before you became a permanent resident counts as half a day;
•each day you lived in Canada after you became a permanent resident counts as one day;
•time spent serving a sentence for an offence in Canada (e.g. prison, penitentiary, jail, reformatory, conditional sentence, probation and/or parole) cannot be counted toward residence - there are some exceptions to this rule;
•absences from Canada may have an impact on your residence. Only a citizenship judge can determine if you meet the residence requirements with fewer than 1,095 days of physical presence¨.

I have been a permanent resident since September 2012. Living in Canada for more than 6 years now. Under the current rules I am eligible to apply for citizenship but, due work schedule I haven´t been able to take the english test and go foward with my application. I was planning to take it the first week of July (I already made the payment).

Now I am worry I won´t meet the residence requirements for citizenship without counting the days I have lived in Canada before I became a permanent resident as half a day.

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, under the new rules you can't count for the time you spent in Canada before attaining your PR status

Pre-PR days not counted, you have 4 days left, try to send the application if you have the main documents. Even if some non essential documents missing send the application, just add a cover letter, explain why you could not send them.

Good Luck.

If your education (secondary or post secondary) was in English or French, you might be able to use that as proof of language

Amh2299: I was afraid of that.. Oh well

TomTony: I will try to send my application without the english test. Let's hope it works.

Raymasa: Half of the courses of my graduate degree were in english, but not the whole program. I don't think that will be enough...

I will keep you posted

You may need to send a proper language proof as outlined under the following link:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0002ETOC.asp

Please check the heading "2. Language proof if you are 18-54 years of age"

Please make sure to read the instruction guide thoroughly and then accordingly complete your application package and send the application.
