Do I need to provide my Passport or just a copy of some pages?

Hey everyone. I got an email asking me to take a photo of myself, submit my passport to them and update any information if anything changed. Nothing has changed so I am not going to update any information but when providing my passport, the email states that some people will have to send a physical copy of your passport and some just a copy. I am from the United States and living here currently while my sponsor is living in Canada. Does someone from the United States need to provide a physical copy of a passport?

If you have a US passport, you have to submit a photocopy only.
