Do I need to apply for my children?

I have 2 children who currently live with their father. My current partner and I are looking to apply for the express entry visa to Canada. We would like to apply for my children to come over as well. Do I apply for the kids at the same time as ourselves even though they would only join us at a later stage? (Possibly around 8 - 12 months later)
Their father and I were never married.

Yes you can include them. They will have to undergo the medical examination too. They will need to come into Canada before the expiration of the medicals. Medicals are usually for 1 year.
You also need their fathers consent.

Thank you for the response. Could we do the medical exam 6 months into approval so as to essentially "buy" more time. Our aim is to make this as easy a transition as possible for them. We want to go over initially and settle in with work, finding a house, school etc before we bring them over so there is stability and routine.

You will need to submit their medicals at the time you are submitting your application.

That is correct. If you do not provide their medicals, then your application will not pass the completeness (R10) check and will be rejected with the first 30-45 days. The only way to get past this is to relinquish your right to ever sponsor them in the future by stating that you do not have any access to them and thus can't get their Medical exam done and an affidavit. You can refer to other such cases on this forum.
