Hello everyone,

I am currently in Viet Nam caring for the birth of my child 5 days ago, and I was wondering whether or not I need to apply for my child citizenship abroad OR could I just bring back the birth certificate and apply in Canada instead? Any recommendations or ideas?

Thank you

You need a temporary passport for your baby if you want to take it with you to Canada. You can not get a temporary passport at the embassy unless you first apply for the citizenship. You do not have to wait for it to be processed, just apply. Then you get the temporary passport and can leave with your baby any time you want to.

By experience, you should apply for your child citizenship and it will takes from 4 to 10 month to be deliver, after you can apply for your child passport. For the temporary passport, you will have to prove that it is urgent, by example having a flight ticket for the baby. But if your citizenship demand is ok ( by example if they don't ask for ADN test) it will be easy to get the temporary passport. You should send a email to the consulate and they will give you a fast answer or just call them.

I will be in the same situation in January. We are waiting for our baby with my wife. I read on this forum and on the CIC website about that. I also went to the Canadian embassy in my wife's country when I was there last week and talked to an employee of the embassy. They said, yes bring the citizenship application and the Canadian passport application at the same time to the embassy and you will get a limited validity passport within three weeks for the baby.
