Hi,

Just filling out a PR application for my wife. She is from Slovakia, but we are currently living in Canada- she is on a one year open work permit.

Quick question. In the immigrant document checklist ( Appendix A of IMM 3901 ) it says to attach originals of police clearances and immigration forms and Photocopies of everything else. So do the photocopies of her passport , our marriage certificate need to be certified true photocopies or just regular photocopies?

Also with the translations I am working with tripple"w".tamanitoba.ca I believe they are certified (it says so on their website) they said my translations will come with Translation + Independent Editing + English certification on the company letterhead. Is this enough. Do the photocopies need to be notarized or certified beyond this? If yes this may be a problem since we don't have the original of her birth certificate here in Canada, her mom scanned and emailed it to us.

1. Regular photocopies.
2. Yes, they translators will certify their translation and that is fine. No, the certification from the translator is all you need, you don't have to have them notarized.
3. YOu may have a problem with the birth certificate, as the translator wants to see the original.

Regular...? Are you sure though? The thing is, there's the following:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3900ETOC.asp

Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:

the English or French translation; and
an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
a certified copy of the original document.
So...looks like the copies can't be "regular"...? In other words, they must be certified?

Thanks for finding this Fandv. I knew I read somewhere something like this.

On the other hand in this is from the checklist in the West Europe guide:

"Assemble all your documents as listed. Check () each applicable item on the list and attach the list to your
documents (a paper clip will do). Send originals of the immigration forms (items 1 to 5 below) and police
certificates. Send photocopies of all other documents, unless instructed otherwise. Do not send your
documents in transparency pockets, binders or folders. If your documents are not in English or French, send a notarized (certified) translation with a copy of the originals."

So it's possible that the "unless instructed otherwise" is what Fandv is talking about. But the last sentence asks for a certified translations with a copy of the origional.

Very confusing. At this point I don't think I can get a certified translation of the birth certificate without the other doucments I have compiled , criminal clearance etc expiring. I think I will have to send the certifed translation with the regular copy.

Anyone have any experience with this specific issue?

Just to clarify. I have certifed translations of the birth certificate and a regular (not notarized) photocopy. Is this okay?

The birth certificate is in Slovakia and we are in Canada and we can't get the origonal to get notiarized without the criminal record check etc expiring.
