Do I need an NOA to file taxes for 2014? Or just the T4? I am helping my Canadian husband file his taxes, which he has never done before, he keeps letting the Revenue Service garnish his wages because he could never figure out how to complete the federal tax return.
I asked him for his NOA and he said he never heard of and neither has his coworker.
We are trying to do the right thing and get taxes filed on time and pay if we owe.
He has income and puts money in RRSP.
We can't get info from My Account on the Revenue Service website because he has not info from prior years.
I am in US and we will apply for my PR Outland after taxes are filed.

He would need the NOA to know the RRSP limits. He won't be able to know the contribution limit other. If he puts too much money in RRSP, CRA may fine him.

on other hand, if he is putting money in RSP and not reporting them to CRA by filing taxes, isn't he losing out on tax returns?

you can try calling CRA to know his limits probably.

Thank you. When he sent me the copy of his T4 he said he didn't have his RRSP info yet, maybe that's the NOA and he just doesn't know it by that name. Are NOA's mailed automatically and if so, what time of year?

NOA's (notice of assessment) are mailed by CRA after they assess your tax file. So he won't have one if he never filed for taxes. Did he ever get any money back from Revenue Canada for putting money into RSP? Also please check if he put money into RSP or TFSA. Filing tax returns is important after putting money into RSP. As far as I know, only way to get money back from paid taxes.

He always says RSP and he sometimes takes money out of RSP, when needs money. He knows there is a penalty for withdrawing and is planning on not doing that anymore. He always owes money to Revenue Service, he does not get a refund. I have sent him a text message to confirm RSP as opposed to TFSA.

we usually get ours in April, as we tend to file taxes around late Feb, early March.
I think you can also go to CRA and create an account, and find all RRSP limit and other info.

so they are charging him money on withdrawal that was never sent to him in the first place. oh boy, i would advice going to H&R block or some place cheaper, to file all the back taxes. The CRA probably owes him quite a bit of back taxes at least for the RSP.

I tried to go to get an account on CRA but it requires an amount on last years tax return. He has not filed a tax return before. I told him he may have to call CRA before we can even file a return.

I looked into having taxes done by H & R block and also a CPA and a Firm, but they all say they have to have his forms. All we have is the 2014 T4. So you are saying we might not owe a lot of money but actually be due some money?

you can request T4 statements from CRA. what about the company he works for? can they help with old T4 forms? you can't file online the first time. has to be done through post. yes i would think he is due money from CRA.

i must say your husband is quite "naive" on the issue :) rare to see a person not caring about receiving money :D

To be clear, they are not "charging" money on a withdrawal, it is merely a tax withholding that is remitted to CRA on his behalf. This is statutory, they are required to do this by law, and it is usually less than the taxes that would be owing on that income. I wouldn't be promising that CRA owes him back taxes.

Also, CRA doesn't issue T4's, employers do.

CRA does have copy of the T4 slips. How else would they verify that the amount submitted in the tax filing is correct. We don't need to submit T4 during tax returns.

From turbo tax-
For previous tax years, you also should ask your employer, however you may be able to get one from the Canada Revenue Agency by calling 1-800-959-8281.
