I'm a small time freelance writer and editor from the US. $10 here, $5 there. Nothing I've ever had to pay taxes on. When I came up to Canada on a visitor visa, I stopped taking work orders. It hasn't really affected me in a big way until recently. I'm starting to get known around the internet community for my works and how quickly I learn things, and I'm starting to get a ton of requests. I haven't been taking them, however, since I don't know if it's legal for me to do so.

Do I need a work permit to do unlicensed work from my home country?

If any of your work is for Canadian companies, sites or customers - then yes. Otherwise - no.

So as long as the person isn't Canadian I can take the commission? And what about a Patreon? I refrained from opening a Patreon in anticipation of moving. I know it's sort of a tight line to walk. My work is literally just people asking me "Can you draw me a cute anime girl? Can you draw me some cute cows?" Then I get a couple dollars on Paypal. And the writing is literally just "Can you write me a cute fan fiction about this character I made having relations with my favourite video game character?"

Nothing's published or being sold or used commercially or for advertising. I was reading about travelling freelancers today and I got curious.
