Hi,

I originally arrived in Canada on IEC in February 2017 which expired in February of this year.

In October of last year, my partner and I applied for inland Common Law spousal sponsorship and things have been looking good while processing. Just received my work permit in the mail.

However, I have a question. With this new work permit, do I also need a new SIN? (And if so, what's the appropriate process?) Or does it get retroactively extended to my new work permit? I know I'll eventually need a new one if I'm granted PR, but I've already had one when I first arrived here on the IEC program. Sorry if this is an obvious and silly question. Confused and can't see anything about it online.

Thanks!

I suspect you do need a new 'permanent' SIN. Does your current number start with a '9' - if so, then it is a temporary SIN (see here: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/sin/temporary.html ).

You need to trot along to a Services Canada office with your OWP and ask them about a new SIN.

Dang it. Minor headache, but that's what I figured. Thanks!
Having said that, I believe with an OWP it is still only a temporary SIN number, so perhaps they can re-use the same one. You will definitely need a permanent SIN once you have your PR and have 'landed'. Worth dropping in to SC for a chat anyway I would suggest.

Go to Service Canada. They will either extend your temp SIN or give you a new temp SIN. You won't get permanent SIN until you get PR, finish landing formalities and visit Service Canada after that.

Your same sin number will be renewed at Service Canada , I’m on my second OWP , same SIN I’m using till I get my landing appointment in Etobicoke, then a permanent SIN is given.

Yeah I recently went through this. Your SIN technically expired with your old permit. They will renew it at service Canada under the same SIN number for as long as your work permit is valid.
