just received a mail, CIC is asking me to bring request documents to pick up my new PR. I just realize my original landing paper is missing, and it will take as long as 6 months to replace it. Is there anyone get their new PR without landing paper?

If I go to the appointment without my landing paper, can I get my new PR?

Sorry, I don't know the answer. But if you go to pick up your PR card without the landing paper, and you get the card without problems, please let us know here.

When I picked up my PR card recently, the CIC officer did not ask for my record of Landing. I gave it to her but she didn't even touch it talk less of looking at it. So it depends on who you meet when you pick up your card. Just go with a photo copy but don't show it or say anything unless you are asked.

Is this your first PR card? If so, it is usual procedure for CIC to mail it to you, so why is CIC asking you to pick it up in person?

If it is a PR card renewal, then why would CIC ask for you landing paper? Is every PR expected to save the landing paper for ever, in case it is requested at each renewal?

Toby,

Do you know that the landing paper can be use as a primary identification?

I did not know that, Steaky, but I'd prefer less bulky forms of identification. ANMd sooner or later a paper will get shredded.

But the second question still concerns me: does CIC want to see the landing paper with every PR card renewal?

I understand that they want it when you apply for citizenship.

Thanks. knowing now how important the landing paper is, I'll plasticize it and lock it away in a safety deposit box.

"plasticize", nah, I would just keep it locked away in a safe place (and keep a copy elsewhere) :D

Actually, Baloo, I had thought of scanning it into my computer, but if the original were lost, would CIC accept the scanned-printed copy?

Doubtful, but it would at least provide you and them the important information, so that they can reference the original.

BTW I scanned mine.

I looked at my wife's landing paper after this exchange of emails. Nowhere is it explained that this paper will be required at PR renewal. Is it mentioned in the CIC website?

The instruction guide for citizenship explains the docs you need p.7 http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/citizen/0002E.pdf

Record of Landing (IMM 1000), or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292) and Permanent Resident Card (PRC) if you have one PLUS two pieces of photo id.

Clear legible copies are sent with the application with a note that "If any of the required documents are missing, or photocopies are not clear, your application may be returned to you. Note: Additional documents may be required during the processing of your application."

And of course, just to confuse the matter more another note in the IMM 1000 and IMM 5292 section..."Note: You must provide all of these documents in your possession. If any of these documents are no longer in your possession, please explain why."
