Do I have dual citizenship automatically?

I was born in 1957 in the United States. My mom was a U.S. citizen at the time I was born (she was born in the U.S.). My dad was a Canadian citizen, having been born in Canada. He had relocated to the United States for work purposes, met my mom, got married, and later I was born. He remained living in the U.S. until his death.

I had been told a few decades ago that my parents would have had to file some sort of paperwork prior to my 18th birthday in order for me to have dual citizenship. However, I know that there have been some big changes in citizenship laws over the years.

My question is whether I automatically have dual citizenship, or would I have had to apply for dual citizenship before I turned 18. Thanks in advance for answering my question!

You are a Canadian citizen as of April 17, 2009 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDeDQpIQFD0), but retroactive to your date of birth. However, if you have any children born in the USA, they are not Canadian citizens. If you want to get proof of your Canadian citizenship, look here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp
