hi,
I sponsored my husband and he was accepted as a permenant resident. I am on disability because I have a life long condition that makes it difficult to keep a job. My husband just moved and he takes care of the kids and has not found a job yet. he has to apply for welfare to afford to live. my question is will they make me as the sponsor pay back the money he gets from welfare even though I am on disability and I can't work?
we live in Ontario.

yes you will be made to pay when your circumstances change . That is if you get a job . Your husband should keep pushing Untill he get a job and pay it all off later if that's posible . More experienced members will share more light on this for you

There really isn't much to add... The sponsor is unconditionally liable to the Government for the welfare debt.

When and how it's collected is another matter... There are circumstances where the Government may elect either to not collect the debt or to defer it.

Details of what was agreed are in http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM1344E.pdf

I would be curious to know what you laid out as a plan to CIC in your initial application to show that your family would NOT go onto welfare once your spouse arrived. How has that plan changed since his arrival? Your family should truly consider an alternative plan because you were obviously making it before his arrival. Personally, I would do everything in my power to avoid going on welfare even if it meant flipping burgers at the local McDonald's for 20 hours a week.

Expect that others responses to this thread might not be as "calm" as the ones you have so far received.

What others have said. Any welfare money your husband accepts within the first three years after landing will be charged back to you. He needs to find a job - any job - not go on welfare.

Welfare money is not enough to live on. A few ideas:
a) search for work/odd jobs on kijiji - with nice weather, people need persons to mow their lawn, paint their deck, etc
b) put up an ad on kijiji looking for work
c) drop Resumes at different businesses(even if they are not hiring) and follow up. A student I know did this for about 5 - 6 weeks and has 2 jobs now.
d) can you work from home? There are home-based positions like data entry, travel agent, etc.
e) word of mouth... let people in your circle know you and/or him are looking.

What skills does he have?

A good job that doesn't require a lot of skill, but still pays a decent starting wage I find, are construction labourer (average $16-$20/hr) and warehouse labourer (average $16-$18/hr). My wages are based in Alberta.

You will 100% need to pay the government back. You signed an oath to the Canadian government swearing that your husband will not go on welfare and IF he does you swore to be responsible for his undertaking. How dare you go through this long process and lay down a financial plan proving you will be able to provide for your family members and then IMMEDIATELY go on welfare instead of taking any random freaking job to provide like the rest of us are willing to do. It's people like you who screw everything up for those of us who don't want to abuse the system.

Guys does Canadians need to pay when they receive welfare ? If not why can't she rather take welfare and have her husband look for a job since shes not able to work ? maybe he should stay on for a short tkme and find a any legal job asap then he can pay it off ? Is it that bad in Canada that there's nothing no job at all ? Am just trying to understand how it like .

No, Canadians don't need to pay. However, she is already receiving disability payments, so I doubt she will qualify for welfare in addition.

It's really good that you have a positive mind as you are consulting here with forum members. By all means your spouse should avoid taking welfare. He will definitely find a job whatsoever even if not suitable for him. People are even doing 2/3 odd jobs to survive.

I agree with SenoritaBella..as a women on her own its hard to get every thing done.I just found a handymann from a flyer.Just trimming my hedge, painting my garage door, staining my shed, most things people can do . He worked 5 days and i paid him $500.00 worth every penny.I would highly suggest trying this first.Good luck

well, he took welfare and I did have to pay all of it back according the Quebec immigration agreement because he was at home looking after our kids after the separation and unable to work fulltime. It wasn't tons of money but still considerable large enough to take a chunk of my savings.
He found work as soon as he was able to get on substidized daycare and get the kids in daycare though. So he was not being lazy or anything and he doesn't ask me for child support payments even though I give to my kids willingly what I can afford. I think since being on welfare,- he knows disability payments are not much for me to live on. So It balances out in the end...I payed on large sum to help him and the kids when they needed it and he got time to raise them at home alone when he had no choice.
point of the post is that at least according to Quebec immigration, everyone has to pay back welfare debts regardless of having a disability or not. And from my knowledge, maybe things have changed in the years, it is different in Ontario because I didn't have to pay back anything to Ontario welfare system when he had to watch the kids for a short time and not work.hmmm...interesting eh?

The laws are NOT different in Ontario. Ontario just probably hasn't caught up to you yet. If you want to sponsor someone new - assume you will have to pay back the Ontario welfare too before you'll be able to sponsor again.
