Diploma/documentation question

Hi. I'm an American and I've been working in Canada for a year. I applied for an extension to my work permit online before the previous one expired on Jan. 31st, but I had to travel back to the U.S. for a brief trip, so my understanding is that I now have to apply for a new one when I return to Canada. I was told recently that I would need to show my diploma from my PhD as part of the documentation, despite the fact that the first time I applied for a work permit, this was not required.

Well, I have searched high and low and I can't find my diploma. Requesting a replacement diploma is a complicated process and even the "expedited" option takes 4 weeks.

I'm wondering if anyone can advise me on what to do. I have my transcripts, my CV, a letter from the dean saying that I satisfied the requirements for a PhD and telling me how to pick up my diploma, and of course the offer letter and letter of extension from my employer, as well as my expired work permit. No one I've asked has been able to direct me to any clear list of required documentation for my job - does such a list exist? Might it be possible to get the new work permit with the documentation I do have?

Also, I'm wondering - if they do find my documentation insufficient, would I be allowed into Canada on a normal visitor's visa? I've been told conflicting things about this by two different border agents.

I'm sorry to keep bumping this, but I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts. Mainly:

1. Is there anywhere I can find a clear list of what constitutes "Evidence that you meet the requirements for your prospective job" for my particular job?
2. What will happen if I am missing required documentation? (I'll be arriving by air in Toronto).

Thank you.
