Hello ALL,

I spent hours and hours to find the real meaning of "INTEND TO STAY IN CANADA" once citizenship is granted under the new Citizenship Law

One of the links I found mentions the following:

Subparagraph 3(1)(c)(i) of the bill asks that the applicant be required to intend, if granted, to continue to reside in Canada. Some have misunderstood this provision to mean that anyone applying for citizenship or seeking to meet the requirements of citizenship, which would be four years of residency out of six, must declare an intention to reside in Canada for the rest of their lives.

Another one:

(c.1) intends, if granted citizenship,
(i) to continue to reside in Canada,

I always felt this clause was misunderstood. It is not the big deal everyone was making it out to be. I found it more similar to swearing your oath to the Queen of England. Everyone swears the oath but many don't even mean it and they will never revoke your citizenship if you later say you think the monarchy needs to be abolished. It is a symbolic thing.

Such clause is misunderstood because there is no legit explanation from government. In addition to what you mentioned above, it is our right to travel and/or choose where we want to live.

Exactly. It is vague for a reason... because there is nothing they can do. You can always "change your mind". It is simply a way to please the anti-immigration faction of voters here without actually doing anything. It is politics for votes.
