Howdy everyone, first time poster here taking the first steps towards an adventure in Canada (hopefully!).

So for a few years now iv'e been thinking about doing a stint working abroad in Canada but only now iv'e decided to start to make some plans, accelerated by my OH having a significant change of heart and new willingness to join me.

Unfortunately i'm stuck at the first hurdle. So here's a little information about my situation.

I'm 26 years old and my other half is 27. I am a plumber qualified to GNVQ level 3 with 8 years experience in various environments including domestic dwellings, schools and in particular hospitals.
My OH is currently working full time in a special school and in her last year of training for a PGCE specialising in educating children and young adults with disabilities.

We are looking to spend a year living in Canada with me making the most of the apparent skills shortage and my qualifications & experience by working in my field. We're not looking to leave the UK until my partner has finished her teacher training which won't be until next July at the earliest.

My partner understands that there is somewhat of a surplus of teachers in Canada so is under no impression that she would get a job in her profession. With this in mind, she would be looking for part time work shared with voluntary work in a special school if possible.

However, iv'e been researching for a while now yet i'm still no clearer on what type of visa i should be aiming to apply for.

From what i can gather my trade doesn't seem to post vacancies far enough in advance for me to arrange a job offer to apply for a temporary work permit. So iv'e been pointed in the direction of either applying for the 'International Experience Canada' visa as a working holiday or applying for an open work permit.

The question i can't seem to find the answer to is whether or not these types of visa will allow my to enter the country without a job offer from an employer in my trade as a plumber or whether these types of visa's restrict my specific trade.

Any advice would be muchos appreciated :) and thank you very much for your time reading through a little excerpt of my life story!

I can't give you a complete, detailed answer - just a suggestion.

Go to Kijiji www.kijiji.com and go to the local sites for Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, etc. Search for plumbers and LMO. I have seen jobs for plumbers with a LMO offered in the Calgary Kijiji before - but they are for out of town (usually Fort McMurray). It's not glamorous by any means. It's north of Edmonton and cold most of the year.... but it DOES qualify for Alberta's PNP program.

Your OH can look into applying for caregiver jobs. It's not easy to find one for "live-out" that will get a LMO, but it does happen. Since she has experience as a special needs teacher, she will find a niche demand in any city. The pay is usually crappy. They want only want a live-in caregiver - and that's something you two need to decide about. (She could live out on the weekend and stay with you). LCP can also qualify for permanent residence through CEC. She can register with www.canadiannanny.com or www.nannyservices.ca or post an ad on Kijiji. Agencies sometimes look for workers through Kijiji. Just be forewarned- some employers with the LCP program don't follow the rules, so she needs to educate herself to her rights as a worker in Alberta/Canada.';p[/
