Currently on LMO (exp in May), looking for next best option....

Hey all,

I've been doing a fair amount of research, but this being the internet, I thought I'd just ask my question in a free public forum.

Anyway, I'm an American citizen currently living and working in Canada under a temporary work permit. I'm married to a Canadian citizen
(for a little less than a year). She has a young daughter that I would like to adopt (I'm not the biological father). We would like to move to BC
fairly soon (ASAP, really). I have a job offer there, but my potential employer hires people as independent contractors. It is my understanding
that I would be unable to work for them as a foreign worker, since LMOs only apply to direct employer/employee relationships.

My occupation (personal trainer, basically) falls under the NOC skill type B and by May I'll have 1 year of experience working in Canada. I've worked
in my field for 7 years, I have a BA and a fair bit of specialized knowledge in my field. I have an incorporated personal business in the US, though it's
been dormant for a few years, as I've been working for other people. My wife and I would eventually like to start a business together, but would be
willing to fast track it in order to expedite my ability to work in Canada, if it would in fact help.

My question is, what's my best option? Any help appreciated.

Starting a business with your wife won't work. So unfortunately you should forget about that as an option.

Your best / fastest option would be to convince your new employer to hire you as an employee. If he agrees and can get an approved LMO, you would then apply for a new work permit.

If your new employer isn't willing to do so, then find another employer in BC who is.

Failing that, your next best option is to have your Canadian citizen spouse sponsor you through family class. If you apply via the inland route, you will be approved for an open work permit approximately six months after the applications is received.

I am of the understanding that once we begin the application for inland spousal sponsorship I will be unable to leave the country, is this true?
My sister is getting married in July in the US and I don't want to miss it - is it possible to get an exemption?
