I recently came to Ontario from the U.S. I will be getting married here in the next month or so. My question is this...am I right in thinking that my spouse will need to apply to sponsor me and then I will need to apply to be a permanent resident?
Is that the easiest and /or only way to do it? Also, how do they verify whether a marriage is legit or not? I mean, we haven't been together very long. We have known each other for years, but only got together about 4 months ago. We are very happy and I am not marrying him to become a citizen, but do they require any kind of proof to see that the relationship is legit or is simply being married enough?
I know I have a lot of questions, but I just want to make sure that this is all done the right way.
One more question...I am allowed to remain here as a visitor for 6 months with my passport. I came here 2 weeks ago and am getting married sometime next month, I believe. While my application for PR is being processed, can I remain in Canada with my husband, even if it isn't approved by the time my 6 months is up? Thanks in advance for your help!

First of all, I would recommend you move over to the Family Sponsorship section of the forum. Next, you need to spend time reading here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp

Yes - your husband needs to sponsor you. Yes - you need relationship proof. No - simply getting married is not enough. You can remain in Canada, but may have to apply to extend your status depending on how your husband sponsors you.
