Cumulative or not?

I have heard that the six month period is cumulative in one place and that it's consecutive in another. I've told ( not sure where) that I can stay six months and go home one day then return for six. I'm from the US so I don't need a visa to enter but if it's cumulative I have visited Canada enough times in the past year to equal three months and with the processing times for an extension (49+ days) I should do it soon. I plan on visting over the winter and beyond as we are going for common-law status to sponsor me into Canada, eventually.
