It is case by case and can happen as short as 2 weeks or upto 60 days. There are various security and criminal back ground checks each one has different validity period. You can request for your ATIP report and it will have all the dates when the security and criminal record clearances were acquired and when are they expiring.

Mostly the security check is not something citizenship applicants need to worry about at all . . . and indeed, any applicant who might have cause to worry about the security checks probably has a good idea there is a potential snag . . . obviously it is not something which occurs randomly but is related to the particular background of the individual.

Thus the good news deserves the emphasis; the good news is that once security checks have been done, their update or renewal is usually a perfunctory process typically done by batch requests (update for up to 100 applicants requested at a time, per request), and for the vast majority of applicants this has no apparent impact on the overall timeline to next step in citizenship application processing.

There is an undercurrent, however, as to any applicant for whom, for whatever reason, there is a snag in updating the security check, any non-routine inquiries initiated for example. Number affected by this is, percentage-wise, very small, although given a quarter million or so applications in process at any given time, the number who are affected can be substantial. Security check snags account for the second biggest cause of long delays (second to residency case issues) for applicants who encounter long delays. Again, though, almost anyone with any likelihood of encountering such a snag probably knew it might be coming long before applying for citizenship . . . got a brother working with Winnipeg gangs? expect a problem. Spent months since applying in certain world hot spots, anticipate the prospect of delay. Been questioned by law enforcement or border officers at length? odds are this might resurface in the citizenship application process. A history working with or for aid groups in world trouble spots, sure the risk of elevated security screening goes up.

The vast majority of us have none of these circumstances even in the periphery, and thus no reason to anticipate anything other than an almost unnoticeable bump in the process waiting for security check updates.
