I'm hoping I may be able to learn something from individuals on this board. I had not considered until today that there might be a chance I could qualify for Canadian citizenship, and I've found it very difficult to sort through Canadian nationality law.

My grandfather was born in Canada in 1916; he moved to the United States sometime between 1917 and 1918. I know he became a US citizen, but it may not have been until World War II, when he served in the Navy.

My mother was born in 1953 in the United States. She has never applied for Canadian citizenship.

I was born in 1985 in the United States. I have never applied for Canadian citizenship.

Is it possible that I could obtain Canadian citizenship? Would my mother have to apply for Canadian citizenship?

Thank you!

As far as I understand the laws, you might just make it as long as you apply before your 28th birthday. There is a self test at the CIC website. Good luck!

Except the mother has to apply and receive her proof of citizenship first.
