Hi everyone,
Can anyone share any information on the cost of living one can expect after landing in Canada? For ex, cost of hiring a 1Bed/2Bed apartment- how are they furnished, local transportation cost, gas & electricity, cellphone, council taxes etc...

Any links, information welcome...

Narrow down to a City, that would be more helpful. Cause expense especially of housing vary from Province and city.

Hi,
Let me share my experience of living in Surrey, BC for last two years.
Apartments can be cheaper compared to (Town) houses. living in a house can be fun, relaxing and healthy. basement suite with one bed room can range from 500-700 (with laundry/small kitchen and living room). Two bed rooms with same features can be rented for about 800- 1000. (CAD). If house owner is good guy, you may get some used furniture with no charges.

If you are not planning to drive as soon as you landed, then you may want to rent a place with easy access to transports. Monthly Public transport charges per person is about CAD 75- 100CAD depending on how far you travel( .1/2/ or 3 zones).
Gas and electricity may very depending in your monthly usage and you are looking at about 100-150 CAD a month for family of 3-4. Cost could go higher if you have in house laundry.
Cell Phones: Get a Fido or roggers wireless family plan and this would be about 75- 150 CAD a month depending on features you want to have with your plan.
So i assume that avarage cost of above basic requirements for a family of 3-4 (father/ mother and one or two kids) may be 1200-1400 CAD) I may be wrong as I never had a family in CA. This is without cost of foods and other general costs.
Consult seniors who are already in CA.
good luck

Plus for your care card fee which is mandatory and I paid about 350 CAD per year plus medical coverage by my employer.

Hi All,

Below is a general idea of expenses for family of 2+2 ...

Electricity 100
Water & Gas 100
Public Transport 250
Food & Grocery 400
Telephone 50
Internet 40

how much is car insurance ?
Hi,
Depending on policy and amount of coverage and condition of your car, amount of monthly insurence can be vary.
Let's say if it is third party insurence and covering one million CAD, driving below 50 miles per day, this is about 220 CAD a month.(This was what I paid). If you have paid any insurence in the past, this amount may be lower supposing that you have never had any accidents or or any insurence claims. If you continue to drive with no insurence claims, above menthoned insurence fee gets lower as you will get 5% of discounts or some kind of incentives for safe driving. if you continue to drive for about 5 years or so without any higher insurnce claims, you may be only paying 50 CAD a month for your insurance. Just make sure you have very good winter- tires in winter seasons and you will be just fine.

Thanks everyone, this was helpful. As soon as I get the visa which I am hoping would be this or next week, I'll need more information from people who have already landed.
Thanks once again IceCube & CBI.
