I have been lucky with my start though. I started last year on a Working Holiday Program, which allowed me to stay and work for 12 months and have me and my girl friend try living together for longer time then just a vacation. I arrived in January 2009 and it went very well. That's why we decided to get married, which happened last July. Not so long after that we started preparing for the application for Permanent Resident and sponsorship. We sent it in last September and were now waiting for my girl friend to be approved as a sponsor.

Since October I have a contract in Québec.

J'était chanceux avec mon début. L'année passée, j'ai commencé avec un Permis Vacances Travail, qui me permettait de rester et travailler pour 12 mois et laissait moi et ma copine essayer d'habiter ensemble pour plus longue temp que des vacances. Je suis arrivé à Janvier 2009 et tout est passé très bien. C'est pour ça qu'on a decidé de se marier. Ça c'était en Julliet. Pas très longue-temps après ça, on a préparé touts les documents pour la démande de Resident Permanent et parrainage. On a envoyé tous en Septembre en maintenant on attends des nouvelles pour ma copine d'être accepté comme parrain.

Depuis Octobre j'ai un contrat à Québec.

I have sponsored my wife 3 years ago when I was in Quebec.The whole process took little less than 5 months including CSQ, PR.
I recently moved out.
If you speak french which looks like you do, it'd be very helpful to get job and move up. I lived in Montreal for 7 years, loved it but I didn't learn French, I needed to move out to get better job.

I'm living in Québec City and I have a fulltime job (in French). So I'm already in a good place to improve my French. ;-)

@Maliza: I tried freelancing first, but that turned out to be hopeless, since no-one knows me. Apart from that, a lot of work is regulated through syndicates/unions, which makes it hard to work if you're not friends with those people. After a few months I've been starting to look for full time contracts, but nobody took me serious because of my limited French. In October I found a company that was interested in me, because they do a lot of business with the US (my English is almost as good as a mother tongue). Since I've started working there, my French progressed very quickly. The conditions are not very special though, almost minimum salary, not really a contract (but a lot of work is based on verbal contracts here), but at least it's some work, since a lot of immigrants have to wait very long for their work permits.
